Winter is here, and so is the battle against dry, brittle hair! The cold air outside and the heating indoors can wreak havoc on your strands, especially if you’re rocking natural Afro-textured hair.

But here’s the good news: winter doesn’t have to mean hair damage and breakage. With the right care, this season can be the perfect time to grow and nurture your hair.

In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how to protect your strands, lock in moisture, and boost hair growth—all while enjoying your favourite cozy winter vibes. Let’s dive into the ultimate survival guide for your hair this winter.

Understanding Winter Hair Challenges

Winter brings with it a unique set of challenges for your hair:

Dryness: The cold air outside and indoor heating can strip moisture from your hair and scalp.
Breakage: Harsh winds and friction from hats or scarves can lead to breakage, especially for fragile ends.
Fragility of Afro-Textured Hair: Naturally curly or coily hair is more prone to dryness because it’s harder for natural oils to travel down the strands. This makes winter care even more crucial.

Understanding these challenges is the first step to protecting your hair and keeping it healthy all season long.

Essential Winter Hair Care Tips

1. Moisturise and Seal

Moisture is everything during the winter. Your hair needs hydration to combat the dryness of the season.

• Deep condition (weekly or bi-monthly) with a rich, hydrating mask like the Herbal Silk Strength Revival Mask (high porosity) or The Moisture Miracle Deep Conditioner (low porosity).
• Double up on moisture after a DC by using the Moisture Miracle Leave-In.
• Seal in moisture with oils like Kink Kare Pro+ (high porosity) or Kink Kare (low porosity), which are packed with natural oils and herbs to protect and strengthen your strands.

2. Low Manipulation and Protective Styling

Protective styles like twists, braids, or wigs are lifesavers in winter. They minimise breakage and shield your ends from harsh weather.

 • Opt for styles that don’t require daily manipulation to avoid unnecessary stress on your hair.
 • Remember to care for your hair underneath protective styles— wash & moisturise regularly and avoid leaving styles in for too long (max 8 weeks!)

3. Combat Dryness

Hydration isn’t just for your hair—it’s for your entire environment.

• Use a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air.
• Protect your hair at night with silk bonnets, pillowcases and scarves, and consider silk-lined hats for outdoor wear.
• Opt for hydrating shampoos like Root Revive to maintain your hair’s natural oils.

4. Fuel Growth from Within

Your hair health is deeply connected to what you put in your body.

• Eat an anti-inflammatory, nutrient-rich diet with foods like salmon, spinach, and sweet potatoes.
• Stay hydrated, and consider supplements like biotin or iron to support healthy hair growth.
• Vitamin D is crucial during the winter months so ensure your diet is packed with Vitamin D rich foods like egg yolks and oily fish, and take supplements, (especially if you are more melanated!)

5. Use the Right Products

Using the right products is a game-changer for winter hair care.

• For moisture, try this method: (1) Deep Condition with the Moisture Miracle Deep Conditioner using a steam cap for added product penetration then go in with the Moisture Miracle Leave-In Conditioner and seal all that goodness in with Kink Kare.
• For growth and thickness, incorporate Follicle Fuel Pro+  into your routine.
• Don’t forget regular hot oil treatments (especially for high porosity girlies) to nourish and strengthen your strands. Don't know how to do one?  Check the IG Reel below 👇🏾

Why Winter is the Perfect Hair Growth Season

Contrary to popular belief, your hair doesn’t stop growing in the winter. In fact, with consistent care and a good routine, this season can be ideal for achieving significant growth. Winter forces us to slow down and focus on self-care—a perfect time to establish healthy habits that your hair will thank you for.

Common Winter Hair Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t sabotage your hair growth journey with these common mistakes:

Over-styling: Constantly pulling and manipulating your hair can lead to breakage.
Neglecting Trims: Trimming damaged ends prevents split ends from traveling up the hair shaft.
Skipping Moisture: Dry hair is brittle hair. Moisturise regularly to keep it healthy.
Quick Fix: Establish a weekly routine that includes deep conditioning, moisturising, and sealing.

You suggest using the LCO method post deep conditioning (leave in conditioner then kink kare oil as sealant), but I’ve read that the LOC is best for low porosity hair (oil then conditioner) — do you have high porosity hair, or do you find the order doesn’t matter?

    Thanks! And appreciate your tips.

    Hey Xara,

    Thanks for commenting!

For both porosity types the correct order is leave in, then oil. This is because applying oil first may prevent the absorption of the water based leave in, which both porosity types need.

    I think you are referring to cream/butter? Leave in, Oil, Cream/Butter. L – O – C.

A butter can definitely be applied after an oil especially for High porosity hair as this porosity type requires a bit more love. A butter can further seal the cuticle which is already highly raised.

Stay tuned to our waiting list for all new product launches 😉!

    I hope this helps. 🧡

    Best wishes,
